Sports Artist JJohn Robertson stands nect to his painting of a screwball baseball pitch that is large scale sports art painting

The baseball screwball pitch grip painting is 50” x 67” acrylic on unstretched canvas.  This means no stretcher bars or frame.  The painting is meant to be hung like a banner or tapestry but can be easily be stretched and framed for a more formal look.  Please notice in the photo that the edges of the canvas are uneven and sometimes frayed with staple marks in the canvas.  This is intentional to give the painting a casual, used and worn look.

How to Grip the Baseball

To throw a Screwball grab a strong grip on the ball at the seams. Wind up asImage photograph of a painting by sports artist John Robertson of a large baseball being held in the manner in which a screwball pitch would be made. you would normally do and just before you release the baseball,  turn your wrist inward and let your pointer finger drag down the side of the ball to start the spin.

Hector Santiago throws the screwball as one of his pitches.  This is how he describes the pitch.  He makes a circle with his thumb and forefinger, spreads his other fingers around the baseball with about a half an inch between each one. Santiago says that the secret is to exert no pressure with the pinkie or ring finger. You move your arm forward push hard with his middle finger on the inside of the baseball until much of your hand is beneath it, creating a clockwise spin. That doesn’t sound easy to me,which is why most pitchers do not throw the pitch.  If you want more information here is a link to help you.
